PARTENZA: Fontainemore (AO), loc. Coumarial.
Da Pont-Saint-Martin si risale la valle di Gressoney fino a Fontainemore. Dopo aver superato il paese, occorre proseguire fino al ponte carrabile che conduce a Coumarial. Svoltare a destra sul ponte e proseguire per circa 8 km superando una serie di frazioni: Colombit, Pian Pervero, Clapasson, Chuchal, Vercosa, Chalasc e Goy. Si arriva infine al Pian dou Coumarial, dove, nei pressi di un'area verde attrezzata, parte il sentiero con segnavia n°3.

PERCORSO: Poco dopo la partenza, la mulattiera, chiaramente tracciata nel bosco, attraversa una strada poderale (waypoint XROAD nel percorso GPS), passa su un ponte di legno (waypoint PONTE) e quindi giunge nei pressi di un ponticello in pietra (waypoint XRIGHT). Qui e' possibile prendere una scorciatoia per raggiungere il rufugio Coda, altrimenti si attraversa il ponte e si segue il sentiero n°3 sulla destra. Il tracciato si sposta nel vallone vicino e raggiunge l'Alpe Carisey (waypoint ALPE). Si prosegue quindi fino all'incrocio con il sentiero proveniente da Lillianes (waypoint XFONLI) ed infine si attraversa una pietraia che conduce al colle Carisey (2132 m), contraddistinto da una grossa croce in legno ed affacciato sulla Valle dell' Elvo, in provincia di Biella. Proseguendo sulla sinistra lungo la cresta erbosa si scorge in breve tempo il laghetto del Montagnit e dopo circa 20 minuti si raggiunge il rifugio Coda (2280 m.,waypoint CODA).
Il rientro puo' avvenire lungo il percorso appena descritto o in direzione di Lillianes (come registrato nel percorso GPS). In questo caso si segue il segnavia n°3 fino al Colle di Portolaz che demarca i confini comunali. Il percorso è pianeggiante e non esposto, anche se in un punto è attrezzato con corde che aiutano ad attraversare una lastra di roccia. Oltre il Colle di Portolaz il sentiero è marcato con il segnavia n.1 e scende rapidamente al Pian de Soursciere ("Pianoro delle streghe", waypoint SOURSC) e poi a Pra de Bosc (1800 m) dove arriva la strada poderale sterrata (waypoint PODERA). Il sentiero n°1 prosegue tagliando i tornanti della strada, ma la traccia diventa rapidamente poco marcata. Seguendo la poderale si raggiunge il ristoro "Etoile du Berger" e si arriva alla località Petit Pra, dove confluiscono i due torrenti Giassit e Burey e dove arriva la strada carrozzabile.
NOTE: Il rifugio Coda è aperto nel periodo estivo, mentre negli altri mesi dell'anno e' accessibile il locale invernale.
Al Pian de Soursciere si trova una roccia piatta con fori che sembrano scodelle: la leggenda narra che venisse utilizzata dalle streghe per i sabbà.

From Pont-Saint-Martin drive into the Gressoney valley up to Fontainemore. After this village, continue up to the vehicular bridge leading to Coumarial. Turn right to cross the bridge and continue for about 8 km passing across several small villages: Colombit, Pian Pervero, Clapasson, Chuchal, Vercosa, Chalasc e Goy. You'll finally reach Pian dou Coumarial where the footpath marked as "3" starts, close to a green space for picnics.

PATH: Few minutes after the start, the walkway, clearly marked inside the wood, crosses a gravel road (XROAD waypoint within the GPS track) and reaches a wooden bridge first (PONTE waypoint) and then a small one made of stone (XRIGHT waypoint). Here a shortcut to the Coda refuge starts but the footpath "3" continues on the right after the bridge. The track goes in the next gully and reaches the Carisey alpine pasture (ALPE waypoint). It continues up to the junction with the footpath coming from Lillianes (XFONLI waypoint) and finally, after having crossed a heap of stones, reaches the Carisey pass (2132 m). This pass connects to the Elvo valley, in the Biella province, and it is marked by a big wooden cross. Walking along the ridge on the left, you will see the small Montagnit lake soon and you will come the Coda refuge after about 20 minutes (2280 m, CODA waypoint).
From the refuge you can either follow the same path back or go towards Lillianes (like the recorded GPS track). In this case follow the footpath "3" until the Portolaz pass which is on the border between Fontainemore and Lillianes municipalities. The path is quite smooth and easy even if there is a rope that helps you to overtake a rock. After the pass the footpath is marked as "1" and comes to Pian de Soursciere soon ("Witches' field", SOURSC waypoint) and then to Pra de Bosc (1800 m) where the gravel road arrives (PODERA waypoint). The footpath "1" continues crossing the road hairpin bends but the track becomes poorly marked soon. Following the gravel road you'll reach the "Etoile du Berger" resort and then Petit Pra pasture where Giassit and Burey brooks meet and where the asphalt road arrives.
NOTES: The Coda refuge is open during the summer season. The rest of the year the winter room is available.
The name "Pian de Soursciere" comes from a big rock carver with a set of holes: a legend says the this rock was used for Witches' Sabbaths.
