Da Loamatten a Niel

Loo Superiore ed il vallone
PARTENZA: Loamatten, valle di Gressoney (Aosta) (1350 m).
Da Pont Saint Martin risalire la valle di Gressoney. 350 metri dopo l'ultimo ponte che attraversa il torrente Lys prima del paese di Gressoney Saint Jean, prendere la strada sulla sinistra che conduce verso la frazione di Loamatten.
Lasciare l'auto nel piazzale alla fine della strada.

PERCORSO: Il sentiero, segnavia "12", attraversa il villaggio di Loamatten ed entra nel bosco. Attraversato il torrente Loo (waypoint PONTE) sale ripidamente fino a Loo Inferiore (1:20 h).
Li si abbandona il boschetto e si comincia a godere di un'ampia vista sul vallone di Loo. La pendenza si riduce e ci si addentra nella valle camminando tra ampi pascoli. Si attraversa Loo superiore (2:10 h), passando di fronte ad una piccola cappella, ed infine si giunge ad un incrocio presso al colle di Lazoney (waypoint X12C, 3:20 h da Loamatten).Prendere il sentiero sulla destra (marcato come "12C") per raggiungere il colle (3:30 h da Loamatten).
Il percorso che scende a Niel e' ora piu' ripido e meno confortevole. 100 metri dopo il colle seguire il sentiero "6" (waypoint X6). Si giunge quindi al bivio con il sentiero per la Mologna Grande, nei pressi di un ponte che attraversa il torrente (1:30 dal passo Lazoney) e la mulattiera diventa una strada lastricata che conduce velocemente a Niel.
NOTE: Una vecchia leggenda di Gressoney racconda di un drago che viveva nel vallone di Loo. Per liberarsene gli abitanti rivestirono di ferro le corna di un toro e lo mandaronoa combattere contro il drago. Dopo una lunga lotta il drago vinse e mangio' il toro ma mori' lui stesso per le ferite alla gola procurate dalle corna rivestite.

From Pont Saint Martin drive into the Gressoney valley. 350 meters after the last bridge crossing the Lys brook before Gressoney Saint Jean, take the road on the right going towards the Loamatten village.
Leave the car in the square at the end of the road.
END: Niel, Gaby (Aosta) (1535 m)

PATH: The footpath, marked as "12", passes the Loamatten village and suddenly enters in the wood. After having crossed the Loo brook (PONTE waypoint), it climbs up to Loo Inferiore (1:20 h).
You leave there the grove and can enjoy a wide view on the Loo valley. The slope becomes gentle and you enter in the valley walking through wide meadows. You'll cross Loo Superiore (2:10 h), passing in front of a small chapel, and finally reach a junction point close to the Lazoney pass (X12C waypoint, 3:20 h from Loamatten). Take the way on the right (marked as "12C") to reach the Lazoney pass (3:30 h from Loamatten).
The walkway descending to Niel is steeper and less comfortable. 100 meters after the ridge take the path marked as "6" (X6 waypoint). Close to a bridge on the Lazoney brook you'll reach the junction (1:30 h from Lazoney pass) with the way to the Mologna Grande pass. The path becomes a stone paved way easily taking you to Niel.
NOTES: An old Gressoney legend says that a dragon used to live in the Loo valley. The people of the village covered with iron the horns of a bull and sent him to fight with the dragon. After a long combat the dragon won and ate the bull but hi died too because the iron covered horns wounded his throat.
